I would guess the I stands for Intermidate low kind of like when gm was doing the tranny pattern with 3, 2, 1, so it would basically be like 2 if it were the olden days again.

im not totaly sur what the i stand for eather. all i know it that there are 3 driving shift positions. the L would be for low gear which would be good for when driving up a very steep hill but when going down a steep hill go lower than 20 before selecting L if selected higher than 20 youll get a hard jurk which isnt good for your tranny. the i is to disable overdrive gear when you have a heavy load wich allows to use only 3 out of 4 gears. and of course D for drive as we all know.
