Again, Gasdia is beyond any serious criticism, bringing true conviction to the plight of the young girl. Martine Mahe, a very well-chosen Marie, proves the fact that you have to cast secondary roles with the same amount of care as the primary ones :).

I find it unusual but "Mose", just like "Guillaume Tell", "Maometto II", works well exactly because of the continuous sympathetic narrative, rather classical operatic set-pieces; it paints a complete picture of the world in which the drama unfolds, instead of trying to single out any characters or emotions. There are some less interesting places, like the dramatically unimportant duet between the Pharaoh and his son, but the work is still truly one of Rossini's crowning achievements :).

Would you mind omitting the first comment, I didn't think it was added the first time around :)?

A most wonderful arioso/duettino section (the first, albeit short, solo moment for the primadonna) of an even more interesting finale to a particularly inspiring work. "Mose" is, perhaps, one of Rossini's most dramatic pieces and, moreover, a musically superb work. Though the French version is a bit tamer in contrast to the Italian (the absence of the striking death of Osiride before the eyes of his beloved), we are still talking about a simply different version of an excellent score :).

A wonderful arioso/duettino section (and the first solo, albeit a short one, for the primadonna) of a most inspiring finale to a brilliant work. "Mose" is certainly one of Rossini's masterworks, if only for the music itself which is consistently dramatic and interesting. Though the Italian version is more openly dramatic that its' French brother (the conflict of the prince is resolved more cruelly in the former), we are still talking about a very powerful and innovative work.
