John Perkins, former "economic hitman," tells the story of Venezuela. In 1998, Cesar Chavez was elected president, following a long line of presidents who had been basically corrupt and who had ruined the economy of the country.Chavez stood up to the US, mostly demanding that Venezuelan oil be used to help the Venezuelan people.The US did not like this, so in 2002, a coup was staged that Perkins says he has no doubt that it had been engineered by the CIA. Very similar to what Kermit Roosevelt had done in Iran in 1953, people were paid to go into the streets to riot, to protest - to "show" that Chavez was very unpopular. The idea was that if you can get a few thousand people on television rioting, you can make it look like the whole country was up in revolt.Chavez was smart enough and avoided this, mostly because the people were so much behind him.
